Stone Cottage In A Historic Small Town With An Interesting Future
Someone is going to get a bargain! Sick of the city and suburbs but want to remain within striking distance of Adelaide? Robertstown and this lovely stone cottage awaits you!

I purchased this cottage around 7 years ago as it was reasonably close to a bush property I had in the Robertstown area. It was to be a last stop, but life happens.

*** About The House

It was built sometime between the 1880's and very early 1900's from what I can gather, and it has stood the test of time quite well. The front section of the house is stone and a hardiplank extension was added to the back at some stage.

One of the interesting features of the place is a cellar that would have been hand-dug; quite a feat given the amount of limestone around.

There is a master bedroom at the front with built-in robes, a lounge, a large kitchen and a separate dining room. Towards the back of the house is a small bedroom that I used an office, laundry area, internal access to the cellar, a toilet and next to that a full bathroom with toilet.

The house has a gas fireplace that I've never used, as I only used the reverse-cycle air conditioners (one in lounge, one in kitchen area).

Just out the back door is another room, currently utilised as a bedroom (hence me listing as 3BR) - the space between that room and the house is covered.

Windows and doors have security screens, not that there's really any need for them in Robertstown - this was a bit of unnecessary hypervigilance on my part.

Out the side is a large covered area and an old water tank that was converted by the previous owners to house a BBQ and servery. This area also has an old grapevine that has produced a good crop each year.

The property has a large, fully fenced back yard with an old chook pen that's sturdier than it looks!

There's a large shed out back (around 6 x 7 metres), which is also accessible from the driveway (shed straddles an internal fenceline). The shed's corrugated iron walls look rather ordinary, but it is a solid construction and I had the roof on it replaced soon after moving in. The shed has a concrete floor, power and water.

There are several rainwater tanks on the property (1 concrete, 1 poly, 1 gal), but the house is only mains water connected. The house is connected to a septic system.

The property has a large driveway area stretching right up to the shed, so plenty of parking is available.

Gas (used for stove - hot water is electric), is bottled and home delivered. You're unlikely to use much if you just use gas for cooking.

The verandah out front gives you a great view of the hills a few kilometres away.

*** Mobile/Internet Connectivity.

As for mobile/internet connectivity, I can only comment on Telstra. It has improved greatly in the past year. However, I had already installed a Yagi antenna (which will stay with the house) to use with my mobile broadband connection as I work online - and that worked really well. Even without the Yagi or any sort of external antenna, mobile broadband reception in the front rooms is good enough to stream Netflix without any problems.

*** About Robertstown

Robertstown is a small, quiet town of 160 or so people, rich in history. It's a close-knit farming community that welcomes newcomers - the people are down-to-earth and friendly.

It's a not far from attractions such as Burra Gorge and a trip up the hills just to the west is well worth the effort - the view is amazing.

In terms of services, there's a general store that was established in 1912 - and still retains its yesteryear charm as well as providing a wide range of goods and services (you'd be amazed what they stock and can get in).

There's also a great mechanic and service station, a community centre and post office, a pub and a pre-school/primary school.

Robertstown is only a 20-minute drive from Eudunda, another great town with more shopping choices, including a well-stocked and kept Foodland that's open 7 days a week; a bakery and newsagent.

Eudunda also has a pharmacy, hospital, service stations and a wide variety of other services.

Robertstown is approximately an hour and twenty minutes drive from Adelaide's northern suburbs. While that's a bit of a long commute for work in the metro area, it's not too far if you're just intending to duck into Adelaide from time to time.

**** An Interesting Future

There's been some big news for this little town in the last year or so.

Construction on a major solar farm around 30k's away is due to start soon (Solar River Project) - and Robertstown is the closest town of any size, so it should see some economic benefits. The project will create hundreds of jobs during its construction, and around 45 full time jobs once complete.

The developers of the solar farm will also be contributing to the community, supporting local sporting teams with sponsorship and contributing to facilities upgrades.

Another huge solar farm is also proposed for the area (but still some distance away) - so more activity there.

Also in the pipeline is a proposed electricity interconnector between SA and New South Wales - and one end of the interconnector will be in the Robertstown area.

I can't see any of these projects changing the town's character (which is a good thing in my opinion), but there may be an increase in demand for housing over the next few years; so there may be opportunities to rent out the house if you should wish to do so.

Even before the news of these projects, I'd had several enquiries to rent the house; but it's just not something I was interested in.
