The gold/copper mine 100klm's down the road is still operating and also employing a number of locals.

Tourism in the town is a major factor with the 3 caravan parks and numerous motels/B & B's always booked out for 9 months of the year. Opal mining plays an important part in drawing the tourists into town and is still employing locals. Most people in town are involved in the opal mining industry in some way.

Coober Pedy is also a major hub for government workers (hospital, mines department, TAFE, school, police, Housing SA to name a few). Yearly costs are minimal (rates $650- p/a, emergency services levy $60- p/a).
